The 05 Surf Film Festival Ciudad de Santander, will take place from the 8th to the 10th of december at Los Angeles movie theater in Santander, Spain. The festival is organized by Los Angeles movie theater in collaboration with municipality of Santander, La Caixa (bank), Hurley, Drift (online surf magazine), The Surfers Journal (magazine), Xtreme Video, Hercos Parayas group (distribuitor of Volkswagen), Printing Ter, El Diario Montanes (press) and Onda Cero radio.
The classic Photo exhibition this year comes from photographer Jeff Divine. This exhibition is possible courtesy of Mr. Jeff Divine and the Surfers Journal and gives us the chance to show 25 jewels focusing on a specific period from 1970 to 1980. his photographs, not only document a particular subculture, but also visually express the spirit of a time. a time of change and transition, filled with creativity, and very turbulent socially and politically. This exhibition will be shown at the Los Angeles theater lobby during the festival. Born and raised in the neighborhood of la Jolla, California, in 1966 Jeff Divine was a 16 year old surfer and amateur photographer who was dedicated to the immortalization of his friends and other local surfers of coastal San Diego. In early 1970 he was recruited by Brad Barrett of Surfer magazine to pick up where legendary photographer Ron Stoner left off. some could say he met surfing at surfing’s first steps and arrived at surfer magazine at the infancy of the sport. this job allowed him to be one of the most prominent chroniclers of this young sport. from 1971 to 1980, divine lived in hawaii and traveled extensively around the world with his camera capturing the art of surfing. in 1981 he became the photo editor for surfer magazine, position he held for 16 years. divine is currently the photography editor of the prestigious magazine the surfers journal and continues to contribute to surfer magazine.
International Section
Ten titles complete the proposal in the international section. They are all current productions since it has been a very prolific year, both in quantity and quality of the titles. Five of these ten titles will be premiere in europe.
This fifth edition of the festival will open with the european premiere of the spectacular film My Eyes wont dry 3 - Tubular Addiction by Brian Conley. After three years in the making, Bryan delivers his third title of this amazing saga. Taking viewers on the journey of their lives with spectacular images from inside the tube to leave the audience spellbound. The movie offers unique images and sensations from the barrel of the wave. This is a highly recommended film for both surfers and non surfers alike.
The european release of Thrills, Spills and What Not, by Yani Lidori and from Dustin Miller’s Flesh Profits Productions and Marine Layer productions. The film brings us to the last year of surfer Dane Reynolds as a surfer and as a person in a very artistic way. The short "Seen / Unseen" from Marine Layer will be shown along with this film. This short, also about surfer Dane Reynolds, has been nominated for "movie of the year" in the 40th annual surfer video awards.
Another spectacular and highly awaited premier in europe is Who is J.O.B? directed by Charlie Smith. This film takes us into the world of Jamie O'Brien. Tells the story of how a blond hair "haole", born in the north coast of Oahu, Hawaii, by an australian father became one of the most respected and controversial surfer in the world. The film has the appearance of the 10 times world champion kelly slater, in what will undoubtedly be one of the film of the year and is nominated for "movie of the year" and "best cinematography" at the 40th annual surfer video awards.
Another european premiere is the indie film revelation of the year Stoked and Broke. A refreshing, fun and clever film by the Emmy Award, Cyrus Sutton. An epic surfari to zero dollars, where Cyrus and his colleague Ryan Burch, make a 8 days surfari foot, for his native coast, San Diego. In an effort to show that surfers do not have to fly across the world and spend thousands of dollars to do a surf trip. Along with the film will be projected a series of short films by www.korduroytv.com. This film is nominated for "best documentary" at the 40th annual surfer video awards.
From the factory of Woodshed Films come two interesting proposals. On the one hand, and in collaboration with Greenlight, the european premiere of Grey Whale Sessions by the young american Tyler Manson and starring Garret "G Love" Dutton, the surfer and californian artist Tyler Warren, Chris Christenson and the famous surfer Keith Malloy. The film follows the quartet characters on a road trip to Baja California, Mexico. We will see them surfing, spear fishing, plunging into the local culture or getting lost somewhere in between. This is, without a doubt, a great place to disconnect from the rest of the world. On the other hand, and also from Woodshed Films too, the successful and acclaimed 180 º South: Conquerors of the Useless by Chris Malloy. The film counts with Jeff Johnson, a young californian adventurer wanting to recreate the legendary expedition to patagonia in 1968 led out their heroes: conservationists Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins. On his trip he will anchor in easter island, catch the longest waves of his life and prepare for the ascent of the Corcovado peak. During this ascent he will encounter Chouinard and Tompkins whom, taken by their love of climbing and surfing, have sold all their belongings and have come to Patagonia to protect it. And the award-winning film by Patrick Trefz, Idiosyncrazies. This film comes after his other successful production Thread’. This documentary is a truly unique exploration of some of the most influential minds of the surfing underground scene today. Showing these unusual subjects in an intimate and fascinating way, both on land and in the water. They talk about their art, musical tastes, boards they use and the way of life they have chosen. The film is nominated for "best documentary and best cinematography" at the 40th annual surfer video awards. The film will be screened in its original version.
An interesting and unusual proposal is also the Sea of Darkness, winning documentary directed by Michael Oblowitz. A pirate story of today, with the wonderful discovery of virgin waves in the remote 1970’s Indonesia. For a small group of thrill seekers, the surf was an addiction, an attitude and lifestyle. They try to live a life of adventure, full of perfect waves and luxury. The film explores the smuggling missions that financed these trips and the terrible price that some of these men had to pay for their passion. Nominated for "movie of the year" and "best documentary" at the 40th annual surfer video awards. The film will be screened in original version.
To close the international program we bring two titles from director Taylor Steele which will be shown in the same function as a special session devoted to this interesting director. First, Castles in the Sky, with a completely new approach to the surf documentary. Filmed in five countries over three years, the film, besides offering wonderful surfing sessions, delves into the countries they visit, showing landscapes and people, their culture and customs. We will see Dane Reynolds in Iceland, Rob Machado in Peru, Dave Rastovich in India and Jordy Smith in Africa. This is the closest thing to a complete surf trip without getting on a plane!. Nominated for "best cinematography" at the 40th annual surfer video awards. And along with this film we will also show Melali: The Drifter Sessions. A surf movie for all those that like last year’s The Drifter, but were missing most of the surf action. While at indonesia for the filming of the award-winning The Drifter, Rob Machado met with some of the best surfers in the world, and were recorded in some epic surf sessions now finally seeing the light. The spectacular soundtrack was created and recorded by Machado and his Band. And the film is nominated for "best documentary" at the 40th annual surfer video awards.
Local Outlook
In the local scene, we will premiere two productions from Cantabria as a second year in a row. The first film is title Among Three and it is the second production (Serial B as his first) of this gender coming out of the hands of Eduardo Sanchez. This time he counted with the collaboration of Ricardo and Pedro Gomez. The film follows three local Cantabrian surfers during the span of a year. Jesus Chocan, local surfer of Los Locos beach, Borja Beraza representing the beaches of Liencres and el Sardinero, and professional surfer Michel Velasco from Ajo beach. The film submerges the viewer into our local beaches and people, showing thru his camera a feeling of union and togetherness and leaving aside all the rivality and localism. The film will be introduced by his director.
The second local production is the documentary Sea, sixth and last film of local director Hector Barrero. The film narrates a week in the life of Ruben Fuente, a local Cantabrian longboarder. A long journey that begins in the spanish north coast and takes us to the south of Spain in search of waves, light and the reencounter of old and new friends. The film has a spectacular soundtrack with artist such as "Lucius Works Here", "Hunt & Bordas", "Dante Place" and "Brian Hunt". We will have an introduction to the movie by his director Hector Barrero as well as live music at the hands of Lucius Works Here, Dante Place and Brian Hunt. We would also like to highlight a raffle for a CECE surfboard that will take place at the end of the movie.
Another highlight of the festival will be the showcasing of five local photographers and their digital work of the last year. Local photographers include Sergio García, Raúl Gunche, Ruben Moro Martinez, Rafael Riancho and Hector Barrero. This year we will remember and honor our friend and surfer Eduardo Perez Castillo, "Capi" who left us this late summer in a car accident. Admissions will be free for this activity.
